Iceland's Route 66?
Bus service along the Sprengisandur route
Summer's not here yet, but I bet a lot of people are itching for a road trip. And Iceland's got a hot one.
Sprengisandur is a certain stretch of the Highlands of Iceland between the glaciers Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull, and is also the name for the road that goes through this region. It's also the name of a remote airfield, but we won't get into that.
How did it get its name? People had to cross the desert quickly on horses, to "spring" over it, to get grass and water. It's also haunted. Stories about evil ghosts and criminals were common, and so people stopped using the route for some time. It's also the subject of a famous Icelandic folk song: Á Sprengisandi. If you play it loud enough while driving there, it will scare away the ghosts, and save your life.
