The 411 On 4/11
Why is April 11th important to Icelanders? It's the date of the latest national referendum on IceSave regulation. Which is important because if Iceland can afford to pay back some money to the UK, William and Kate can have a really lavish wedding.
But while Iceland's President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson reminisces over last year's veto, Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir plots her own decisive action.
"Children are our most precious resource," said Sigurðardóttir, with passion, at a recent press conference. "But Iceland is squandering her resources. So I propose we put the children to work. Simple tasks for small hands. Little girls in factories sewing buttons on sweaters. Little boys dressing up like elves and performing musical revues for tourists. Things like that. We will show the world Iceland's unique brand of ingenuity."
Human rights activists around the world immediately condemned the idea. But Sigurðardóttir, a seasoned politician, revealed an ace up her sleeve.
"I've commissioned Björk to record a song to promote my idea. Once these watchdog groups learn of her involvement, I'll be untouchable." Then, she added with a smile that was pure Iceland, "You don't see strategy like that coming from our president now, do you?"
